Fully automated and certified strength grading

05 2011

According to the European Standard for strength grading EN 14081-1, the machine strength grading is carried out in two steps:
1) The grading by machine and
2) The visual inspection of the additional features of the wood.

Starting today, Microtec solutions for strength grading, such as Viscan and Goldeneye, are accredited by SP, the Technical Research Institute in Sweden, accepting the second step of strength grading, therefore a visual inspection is no more needed, as stated in the report of SP: «There is no requirement that each timber piece has to be checked or to be turned».

  • Goldeneye 706 is a multi sensor system for quality detection and for strength grading determination. This system combines color- laser- and x-ray scanner with Microtec’s oscillation measurement system, Viscan. Goldeneye 706 recognizes the wood defects inside the lumber as well as defects which are hardly recognizable with the human eye, such as sound knots. The multi-sensor technology provides highly precise measuring results.
  • Viscan is the optical oscillation measurement from Microtec for determination of MOE/MOR of wood. Viscan works insensitive against environmental conditions, such as noise, and measures the oscillation of the board by a laser-vibrometer. Therefore the repeatability for the ViScan measurement is 99%.
  • Curvescan is an innovating measurement system by Microtec which detects and reconstructs the geometric shape of a board by a snap-shot. The special feature of this system is the exact recognition of the geometry of the board even if the lumber is in motion during the measurement.
