The Weihenstephaner Forsttag 2016 focusses on fast-growing tree species Douglas-fir in all its facets.
Andreas Rais from Microtec, Brixen, will talk about wood quality of Douglas-fir, the grading of its sawn timber and which parameters should be applied in order to get Douglas-fir products of highest quality. Throughout the entire value chain - from a seedling to the sawn timber - the influence of both silvicultural treatments and processes inside sawmills, have been investigated to see the effect of wood quality and production. Also part of his presentation will be the screening of Douglas-fir logs by means of Microtec’s CT Log.
For the first time, size and position of internal wood defects can be accurately described in all three dimensions. Using the internal defects, CT Log evaluates appearance, quality and strength and assesses their impact on the final products before the physical breakdown of the log. Sawing and bucking solutions are continuously optimized based on the highest quality and resale value, allowing production to be managed according to real-time priorities.
Andreas Rais with extensive expertise in forestry graduated from Technische Universität München, Munich and is Accreditation & Intellectual Property Manager at Microtec company.
