Hardwood quality scanning with Goldeneye

“Thanks to the professional support of Microtec’s engineers and technicians, we finally got a scanner that perfectly fits our needs. Due to assiduous adjustments of the software part, it has been possible to come along with all our requests,” comments Rob Liistro at Auswest Timbers.

Auswest Timbers Pty Ltd is the first hardwood producer in Australia to upgrade a planer line with an automatic quality grading Multi-Sensor scanner delivered by Microtec

In February 2015 representatives from Auswest Timbers attended a demonstration in Melbourne of the optimizing cross-cut line with Microtec scanning technology. Auswest Timbers came to have their wood tested. The test went well and the results were very satisfying. At Ligna in May 2015 Auswest Timbers visited a reference line in Germany.
Recently the company upgraded the Greenbushes facility for hardwood production by installing a Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner, Goldeneye 300 with X-ray from Microtec. This scanner is combined with a cross-cut saw model Opti-Kap 4003 by System TM. Although Microtec, the world leading scanner provider, is specialized in softwood scanning and due to the vast experience in scanning technology, the dedicated engineers were able to meet the challenge and to develop a hardwood application for the Australian eucalyptus species Karri and Jarrah.

From manual to automatical quality sorting for more cost efficiency
Installed in the operating area of a planer line, the new Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner Goldeneye 300 has the advantage to quality grade the boards and to push the production as from manual to automatic sorting. The X-ray scanner with 4-side visual inspection is equipped with the multisensory channels, like X-ray image, laser 3D triangulation image, laser scatter and grain deviation image and high resolution color images at a forwarding speed up to 100 m/min. The scanner is interfaced with a cross cut saw provided by the partner System TM to maximize recovery.

Scanning Optimization included
The optimization part of the scanner allows the acquisition of board properties and wood defects including their relative positions from the scanning process. The defect detection includes the measuring of the dimension and the description of their position and their properties. The optimization maximizes the value of the obtainable product by considering all possible combinations from the activate product list.

Relying on Microtec and System TM

Auswest Timbers Pty Ltd is the first hardwood producer in Australia to upgrade a planer line with an automatic quality grading Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner delivered by Microtec. The cross cut saw which interfaces with the scanner, has been installed by System TM.

100% Optimization

The optimization maximizes the value of the obtainable product by considering all possible combinations from the activate product list. This scanning optimization increases lumber utilization while reducing labor costs. Also the fast return on investment makes out of the scanner a real must-have in the wood working industry.

Karri and Jarrah hardwood

Karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) is known as the giant tree of Western Australia, with examples in excess of 50 meters in height. It has quite rapid growth, and can attain enormous dimensions. Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) is rated as very durable regarding decay resistance, and it is also quite resistant to insect attack. Jarrah is a widely distributed timber throughout southwest Australia.
Milling Jarrah and Karri into a diverse range of timber products from large, heavy structural sections, floor joists, roofing timbers and roof tile battens to value added kiln dried and dressed products such as floorboards, decking and some of the most beautiful furniture timbers.

Return on investment due to solid and reliable equipment

Installing this solution has resulted in a very high wood utilization with a minimum of waste, leading to a fast return on investment.
