York Timbers Sabie Mill, is one of the largest in South Africa, converting pine logs into a range of sawn wood products. Recently the Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner Goldeneye 702 was upgraded to the Goldeneye 706 at York’s finger joint plant, which included Curvescan and Viscan Strength Grader. As York is in the phase of upgrading their site, this scanner was selected to ensure that adequate capacity will be maintained. Up to 75% of the mill production goes through the scanner that makes use of acoustic, laser and X-ray technology to determine timber strength properties and defines optimal cutting solutions on timber. Scanner boards are then processed on Opti cross cuts to prepare boards for the Finger jointing process. All structural timber produced at the mill is planed and graded in accordance to South African National Standards 1783 before being shipped to various customers across South Africa as well as internationally.

First Goldeneye 706 Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner
York Timbers installed the first Microtec Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner, Goldeneye 702, and the dimension scanner Curvescan, in 2006. In 2012 York Timbers Sabie mill decided to upgrade the existing Goldeneye 702 to a fully featured Goldeneye 706 at the finger joint plant. Nukor, a local sawmill engineering company, has supported York Timbers Sabie mill in this project. A few months ago, Microtec technicians have successfully started up the new equipment.

Today, York Timbers Sabie mill takes advantage of the most powerful scanning equipment for pure recovery maximization. Oscar Tait, plywood and sawmill manager at Sabie Sawmill states with satisfaction: «I am very happy with the performance of the scanner and we have seen a difference in our product mix within the first week after the commissioning. Not only did we improve our mix but we have also managed to increase throughput through the finger joint plant. The quality of the product going to the finger joint is much better. This has been a very good investment for us.»
